A Bit of Horoscope History
|
Astrology
is actually one of the oldest philosophies of man that continues to
survive and thrive in the modern world. Millions of people check their
horoscopes every day - some believe in it vehemently, others view it as
a mild recreation, and with others, it is a demonized concept.
The
word "astrology" derives from the Greek meaning "science of the stars".
Way back in time, astrology, and our currently accepted science of
astronomy, were one in the same.
The
book of Genesis (beginning in chapter 1, verse 14) declares that God
placed the stars in the heaves "to act as signs to mark seasons and
days and years" - which is exactly what man used the stars to do. The
stars were their guide to the seasons, even in climates that had very
mild seasonal changes. Plant in spring, harvest in fall. We have to
remember that there was no "Farmer's Almanac" back then.
Eventually,
the Chaldeans (of Babylonia) began to place a heavier importance on the
stars in that, if they were to act as signs of specific days, then they
could also be ascribed to the day of one's birth. Well...
Have
you ever wondered about the star that pointed the three wise men to
Jesus at the time of his birth? From my own religious studies, I
learned that these men were most likely Zoroastrians, believers of one
universal God that was uncreated (i.e. from the beginning) and yet,
also, the creator. These three wise men play a major role in the Christian faith.
What
were the wise men searching for in the heavens? How did they know the
bright star was proclaiming an important birth? And even more to
ponder...why would God choose these particular three men in which to
reveal his good news?
Okay,
okay...just it's all just a little horoscope fun here, right? Yes. But
perhaps we should take some time to ponder man's history, philosophy,
religions, and beliefs. Oftentimes we tend to assume that things are
now just as they have always been. Not so. Not so. A study of how and
why man came to believe in certain philosophies and religions is quite
a rewarding experience. We will always be surprised at what we learn.
And eventually, we come to learn how very little we actually know about
our mysterious universe.
